CPIA
The Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes (CPIA), the academic support program for student-athletes at the University of Connecticut, was established in 1986 to provide counseling, tutoring, and academic enhancement to intercollegiate student-athletes. As a unit within the Division of Academic Affairs, CPIA serves over 600 student-athletes each year.
The primary goal of the program is to assist student-athletes in reaching their educational goals while competing in intercollegiate athletics. As academic affairs officers, CPIA counselors function as liaisons between the athletic and academic communities.
Our counselors work closely with coaches, faculty and a variety of campus resources in order to help facilitate students' successful transition into college by instituting academic and social support programs which include but are not limited to Counseling, Pre-Advising, Tutorial, Life Skills Programs and boundless opportunities for personal growth and development. CPIA is now considered as one of the model programs of academic support in the country.
UConn is also proud to have high achieving students. Each year, the dedication our student-athletes translates itself in many academic accolades such as Big East Academic All Stars, Academic All-American and Honda Broderick Award. This is one of the reasons why U.S. News and World Report have recently picked UConn among the top public institutions in New England that balance athletic success with academic integrity and graduation. UConn truly has the best of both worlds.
During the past decade, there has been an upward trend of students achieving a 3.0 grade point average or higher. Our student-athletes graduate at a rate higher than the general student population and many are actively involved in a number of community service activities with surrounding elementary, middle and high schools.
This coming summer, there will be an enhancement center in the new football complex equipped with a new lab and study rooms. In the spring of 2003 CPIA completed the renovation of its academic enhancement space, doubling its previous space in Hall Dorm and providing its students with a comfortable study environment, a 25-computer lab, and newly designed offices. In addition, an academic enhancement center was established in Gampel Pavilion for Men's and Women's Basketball and was completed in the fall of 2002.
The Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes at the University of Connecticut is constantly evolving, changing and expanding to meet the needs of student athletes. Please feel free to call, email, or stop by the offices to talk with any of the counselors or Director.
