Programs

            Students at the University of Connecticut are very involved in the community.   They often engage themselves as mentors to an underprivileged population by volunteering their time and energy.  Such experience has enabled many of them to become an active participant of the local community and learn much about the meaning of civic engagement.  Some the community service programs include but are not limited to the following:

  1. “Littles” Visit UCONN

 In partnership with the Nutmeg Big Brothers Big Sisters, the program is an annual event where student-athletes develop a relationship with a child (e.g. Donnell Ford, a member of the football team won the Horizon Award at a Bowl Game due his mentor role with Leo, a little brother

  1. Positive Steps

 Players serve as mentors for young men who the court has mandated to therapeutic program.  Players interact with these youngsters in the past in activities each Thursday for 2.5 hours and served as strong positive role models.

  1. MS Walk                       

Students’ involvement to this program has grown over the years. Each year, the football team participates to this program and thus contributes to the awareness of Multiple Sclerosis.

  1. Children’s Hospital

 Each semester, students go visit the Children’s Hospital to visit, read and play with the children.

  1. Husky Sport

Husky Sport is an after school and summer activities program designed to expose Hartford youth, especially females, to a variety of sports and physical activity in general. While involved in sport and physical activity, participants are also assisted in developing healthier lifestyles and forming positive relationships with current UConn student-athletes and former student-athletes, now graduate students, who serve as mentors.Click here for more information
